FAQ

  • What is a LAN Party?

LAN is simply an abbreviation for Local Area Network. A LAN Party is where a bunch of likeminded people get together to play games, share expertise and socialise in a generally hi-tech environment.

  • What is LAN Sports Gaming Network?

LAN Sports Gaming Network computer gaming event held 4 ~ 5 times a year in Albany, Western Australia. LAN Sports brings together gamers of all ages and levels every few months, giving them the opportunity to prove themselves in many competitions and socialise with other gamers. LAN Sports aim to provide a fun and tournament based event comprised with prizes for the winners. Essentials such as network, tables, chairs and power are supplied at the event. Food and drinks available for purchase throughout the event.

  • Does LAN Sports provide computers or do I need to prove one?

LAN Sports is BYOC event. You need to supply your own computer.

LAN Sports provides the essentials (Power, Network, Table and Chair). LAN Sports is a BYOC (Bring Your Own Computer) and all the associated gear you need to run it. This should include:
  • your computer (or laptop), with your games installed and updated
  • your monitor
  • keyboard/mouse/game controller (Mousemat too)
  • headphones (No speakers)
  • power cables (for both monitor/pc/console)
  • appropriate clothing (Albany gets cold)
  • deodorant (handy if its an overnight lan)
  • A plastic storage box or gym bag is worth investing in – makes carrying all your things in much easier!

We ask that you only bring 1 per computer person.

Please do not bring more than what you need and do not bring a UPS.

  • Can I bring a dedicated server?

If you wish to setup a dedicated server for the lan, we ask that you contact us within 3 days before the lan so we can plug it into the server farm on the setup day. Dedicated Game server’s only… no dedicated file servers thanks. If you have a file to share (thats not piracy related) let us know and we will place it on the central file server.

  • How should I prepare my computer for the lan?

Make sure your O/S (Windows, Mac OSX, Linux, etc) is up to date along with your Anti-Virus (If you do not have an AV product installed, avast offers a free for home use solution which works great! http://www.avast.com). Check that your computer is also set to receive an IP address automatically from DHCP… If you don’t know what this is, chances are that the settings are correct.

Make sure you have all the games you want to play installed and updated (Including steam). We provide the latest patches for games we
advertise as playing at the lan but if you want to get into gaming quicker it’s best to have it already done before the lan.

  • My computer is having problems at the lan… help!

We can help you with connecting to the network and point you into the direction of files and connecting to game servers. Beyond that, we cannot and will not touch your computer. A consultant from a local computer shop is generally attending the lans and maybe able to assist you, but you maybe subject to an hourly charge from them (not LAN Sports).

  • Is there Internet available at the LAN?

A Limited internet services is available.

Due to an increasing amount of games requiring some form of authentication online we’ve introduced internet services. Delivery is done by a wireless service and is no good for playing games online so we ask that you please limit your use online to authenticating a game, help in a particular game or chats. Please don’t download large files. If you do please seek permission from the admin team.

  • This is great! is there anyway I can help?

Volunteers are always welcome! This can involve helping us setup before/cleanup after the event, sign gamers into the event, sell food and drinks (if available). Volunteers are rewarded with a shirt (when available) and free entry to the event. Volunteer Server Admins are also welcome but are subject to spots available and computer skills. Server Admins are not eligible to win tournament prizes. If you are interested in helping out, please use the Contact Us.
